 From 1st January 2020, the U.S. has to use a new surveillance system – Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and it will be publically broadcast aircrafts identity, position, and other information.

This has come up as a security concern among stakeholders, Reisman also said in his paper explaining about the ADS-B system that it does not include provisions to maintain the same aircraft privacy options, even it doesn’t aware about the hoaxing,   rejection of service, and other well-documented jeopardy factors.

Keeping in mind the concern related to air traffic data, the military need for keeping it intimate is likely to remain pivotal in their adoption and use of ADS-B’, Reisman also added. In order to bring such and other issues in the picture, the researchers have presented a prototype in the paper, dubbed the Aviation Blockchain Infrastructure (ABI), based on Hyper ledger Fabric and smart contracts that allows monitoring what data is shared publicly or privately with authorized units. To provide instances aircraft “state information, “such as altitude, indicated airspeed, heading etc., need to be kept secure through a private channel, whereas flight-plan information, such as aircraft type, origin, destination, field route, etc., are allowed to disclose on a public channel for access to approved members.
